Apple Newton MessagePad 120

1995年頃購入のApple Newton MessagePad 120です。当時FAXや電子メールを送ったりして遊びました。表カバーには使用によるそれなりのキズあります。自宅保管したままかなり時間が経っており、ニッカド電池が若干液漏れしていましたので電池室をクリーニングしてから3Vリチウム電池を交換して単三乾電池で無事起動しました。液晶には保護シートを貼ってありビネガーシンドロームはありません。よくあるアイコン名などの文字化けはコールドリセットした場合、あるいは長期間、内蔵電池、充電電池とも電源が切れていた場合、内蔵のROMからAppleがあてた日本語パッチが消失してしまう為のようです。これはAppleからは提供はされてませんのでハードリセットして本来の英語版として使うしかありません。ためしにUniFEPやフォント等をインストールしてみましたが今度はアイコン名の英語表示まで文字化けしましたので再度ハードリセットして英語版に戻しました。Newton Language Kit（エヌフォー）が手に入れば日本語仕様に復帰できるかもしれません。 
充電用スタンドに載せている状態なら本体にバッテリーが無くてもACアダプターで起動します。専用シリアルケーブルを使ってシリアル接続でFDやCDからインストールができました（シリアルポート、FD、CDが使えるMacintoshが必要ですが）。
