1980年6月4、5、6、8日、ということはつまり亡くなる約3か月前、ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードにおけるライヴ演奏を収録した6枚組のボックスセット。存在は知られていたものの、96年になって初めて日の目を見た演奏ばかりだ。ビル・エヴァンスはここに聴かれるマーク・ジョンソン＆パット・ラバーバラを擁するラスト・トリオをとても気に入っていて、スコット・ラファロ＆ポール・モチアンがいた時代のトリオに匹敵すると、インタビューで語っていたほど。たしかにこのトリオは歴代のエヴァンス・トリオのなかでも、間違いなくベスト3に入るだろう。その立役者はなんといってもマーク・ジョンソン。エヴァンスと対等に渡り合い、エヴァンスのアイディアを独自に展開していくジョンソンの創造的なプレイは、本作でも際立っている。それにしても晩年のエヴァンスの演奏には、ただならぬ妖気が漂っていて、聴く者を興奮させずにはおかない。「イェット・ネヴァー・ブロークン」など、本作でしか聴けない曲が入っているのも魅力だ。（市川正二）
